Steam Again ... For the Little Train of Pelion

The Pelion Train, a mythical route

A little train's fascinating story and the mythical tales of Mt. Pelion, all combined in a unmarried magical journey!

The train'due south only intermediate stop is at the Ano Gatzea station from which information technology toils on to Milee and towards the completion of this 15km run in a full of nearly 90 minutes.

Upwards until Milee, the route is filled with natural beauty and features numerous architectural landmarks, constructions from carved stone and grey limestone that grade arched bridges, tunnel entries and retaining walls, an exquisite sample of which is the five-arched stone bridge of Kalorema, in the area of Malaki.

On the final approach towards Milee, the scenery becomes more extreme, with the crossing of the steel bridge of Taxiarhis, likewise known equally "De Chirico'south Bridge" being the highlight of this last department. Here, some pretty unique engineering is at piece of work. This is a rare occasion where a train crosses a bridge that is straight, merely the tracks that prevarication on it are actually curved!

At the end of the route lies Milee station. Traditional guesthouses and taverns expect the visitors, while a cobbled stone footpath takes you up the village'southward main square (about 15m). Here one can marvel at the church building of Taxiarhis, which was constructed before 1741 and the library which is one of the oldest in Hellenic republic or visit the museum of folk art. The next opportunity to admire the most scenic railway line in Greece is at 15:00 when the footling railroad train will start its descent towards Ano Lekhonia.

The station is situated 12km abroad from the city of Volos and is served by the Volos – Lekhonia -Platanidia passenger vehicle line, which runs on the road that heads for Kala Nera. This footling train has quite a story…

This historical railroad train that used to operate the whole route between Volos and Milee is literally running on the tracks of history. Structure began in 1892 and in 1896 the first office of the line, namely until Ano Lekhonia had been delivered. The balance, all the way up to Milee would accept to await for 1903. The chief engineer of the projection was Evaristo De Chirico, father to the well know painter and sculptor Giorgio De Chirico, who was built-in in Volos. Little De Chirico was present during the construction works, observing this foreign, new, ways of transportation that was later to inspire him and take its place in many of his creations, usually in the course of a miniature railroad train silhouette, one-half-hidden behind walls or arches, as seen through a child's "spying" gaze into the adult world…

The mythical route

The little train of Pelion crosses the mythical routes of the Centaurs and the Dodecatheon as, according to the Ancient Greek Mythology, Pelion was the summer habitat of the twelve gods of Olympus.

Somewhere in the dense wood covering the slopes of Mt. Pelion, and in item, where the R.R. Station of Milee is today, researchers place the site of the wedding between Pileas and Thetis (the parents of Ahcilles). According to the legend, the mythical boxing involving the Centaurs and the Lapiths for the sake of beautiful Ippodameia also took identify at this very site.

Deep in the gorge of Taxiarhis, on the last plow towards Milee, lies the cavern of wise Centaur Heiron, a fundamental figure in many aboriginal Greek myths, usually making his appearance as the tutor of Achilles. Heiron, who was a healer, had bestowed upon Achilles'south parents the spear which he later used in the Trojan War.

The cave of Heiron is exactly at the foot of the rock on which the chapel of Taxiarhis can be establish today. It is said that within that cavern is the beginning of a path that connects this cave to a similar one in the surface area of Malaki or fifty-fifty further, to the hill of Goritsa, on the due east side of the urban center of Volos.

The piffling train of Pelion runs Saturday and Dominicus.

The train departs from Ano Lekhonia station at 10:00 am and from Milee station at fifteen:00, with a 15-minute stopover in Ano Gatzea in both directions of the itinerary.

Standard single journey ticket costs 10€ and render journey ticket costs xviii€.

Children single journey ticket costs vi€ and return journey ticket costs 10€   (4 to 12 year).

From Monday to Friday special discounts and offers are applicative for passenger groups and train rental during the yr.
